Using the SRS searches, you can search for substances by Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CASRN)/EPA Chemical Identifier, name, or alternate identifier. You can also search EPA regulations for substances of interest or other information resources containing data about a particular substance. Information on submitting organizations is available. Substances and information resources are added regularly.
- Identifier Number Search - queries substance information by various types of identifiers (e.g., Chemical Abstracts Registry Number, EPA ID, TSN, ICTVdB).
- Name Search - queries substance information using up to 3 name fragments, molecular formula, substance classification (e.g., chemical, biological organism), or name type (e.g., radionuclide).
- Alternate Identifier Search - queries substance using EPA program information systems (e.g., pesticide product codes) or regulations (e.g., RCRA Hazardous Waste Codes).
- Searches Using Lists - queries substance information based on the union, intersection or subtraction of substance lists.
- Information Resource Search - queries data systems and other information resources by beginning letter/number, keyword, or information resource type.
- Organization Search - queries organizations by name or acronym.
- Environmental Metadata Gateway - enables users to search the metadata registries using a URL with integrated search capabilities.

Identifier Number Search
Use the Identifier Number Search to find substances of interest by entering the identifier number and selecting an identifier type. The EPA Identifier (EPA ID) is being used for consistency across all the EDR data registries. The EPA ID is being used in lieu of the EPA Chemical Identifier (from the Chemical Identification Data Standard) and the Biology Identifier Number (from the Biology Identification Data Standard) to search chemicals, biological organisms, and other substances including physical properties.
Name Search
A Name search can be done two ways:
- A simple text search (using the qualifiers Containing, Beginning With,
or Exact Match) will match the text exactly as entered in the keyword box (for Name, Definition, or Name and Definition). If the Root option is selected, any numbers, symbols, and spaces in the keyword box will be removed and the search will query the modified text to retrieve related names (for Name only).
- A fragment search with up to three fragments (linked by either 'And' or 'Or') will query names (for Name only) that contain all of the fragments ('And' search) or any of the fragments ('Or' search).
Note: Classification restricts the search to biological organisms, chemicals, miscellaneous objects, or physical properties. It can be used only in combination with keyword. Selection of Type restricts a search to a substance category, biological taxonomy level or other. Type can be searched independently of other criteria. Selection of Molecular Formula restricts the search to chemical substances that contain the complete or partial molecular formula entered. No other search criteria are required for a molecular formula search. Note that there are many chemical substances without molecular formula in the database, and this selection might result in incomplete search results.
Alternate Identifier Search
Note: Results are sorted by substance name
Searches Using Lists
Several searches can be done that combine, intersect, or subtract lists of substances from two or more information resources. The dark areas in the graphics indicate the answer that will be returned when the search type is used. For a more detailed explanation of how to use lists please go to Help.
Union, Intersection, or Difference
 | Union - a list of substances found in any of the selected resources (e.g., A + B). |
 | Intersection - a list of substances that are in common across the selected resources (e.g., A intersects B). |
 |
Difference - a list of substances that are not in common across the selected resources (e.g., (A + B) - (A intersects B)). |
Select the lists for Union, Intersection, or Difference from the Information Resource box below. Choose the search type and sort order from the buttons under the box. Multiple sources may be selected by using the CTRL key and left mouse click.
Minus
 | Minus -a list of substances remaining when the selected resources are subtracted (e.g., A - B). |
Select the lists to be used from the two boxes below. The selections in the List B box will be subtracted from the selections in the List A box. In the case of multiple selections in either box, a union will be done before the subtraction. The results will be the substances unique to the information resources selected in the List A box (e.g., A - B). Choose the sort order from the buttons under the second box. Multiple sources may be selected by using the CTRL key and left mouse click.

Information Resource Search can access all information in two ways:
- To search for a specific word or phrase, enter text (e.g., air) or a text string (e.g., Clean Air Act) in the keyword field. The search will query all information types, unless a specific information resource type (e.g., Data System) is selected from the pull-down list. The keyword portion of the information resource search queries all text fields (e.g., name, acronym, abstract, etc.).
- To obtain a complete list of information resources by type (e.g., Data System), select type from the pull-down list and leave the keyword field blank or to retrieve
all available information resources, select the information resource type "All" and leave the keyword field blank.
For an Information Resource Search description, please click on Help. Definitions for Information Resource Types may be found in the Glossary.

Environmental Metadata Gateway
The Environmental Metadata Gateway (EMG) offers a
Direct Portal to access information in the SoR registries. Go to the EMG to learn more on how to build links to the Direct Portal and to learn more about other
EMG features, including Custom Portals and the XML Gateway.
