Expand Environmental Technology - An all-inclusive term used to describe pollution control devices and systems, waste treatment processes and storage facilities, and site remediation technologies and their components that may be utilized to remove pollutants or contaminants from or prevent them from entering the environment. Examples include wet scrubbers (air), soil washing(soil), granulated activated carbon unit (water), and filtration (air, water). Usually, this term applies to hardware-based systems; however, it also applies to methods or techniques used for pollution prevention, pollutant reduction, or containment of contamination to prevent further movement of the contaminants, such as capping, solidification or vitrification, and biological treatment. [EPA Quality Manual 5360]
Bullet Biotechnology - Techniques that use living organisms or parts of organisms to produce a variety of products (from medicines to industrial enzymes) to improve plants or animals or to develop microorganisms to remove toxics from bodies of water, or act as pesticides. [Terms of Env]
Bullet Clean Technologies - Industrial process which causes little or no pollution. [GEMET-US]
Bullet Cleanup Technologies - Mechanical and scientific tools used to assess, accomplish, and monitor the cleanup of hazardous wastes
Bullet Innovative Technologies - New or inventive methods to treat effectively hazardous waste and reduce risks to human health and the environment. [Terms of Env]
Bullet Nanotechnology - Technology development at the atomic, molecular, or macromolecular range of approximately 1-100 nanometers to create and use structures, devices, and systems that have novel properties. [NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms]
Bullet Technology Verification - Verifies the performance of innovative technologies that have the potential to improve protection of human health and the environment. [Environmental Technology Verification Program, EPA.gov]

Expand Monitoring - Periodic or continuous surveillance or testing to determine the level of compliance with statutory requirements and/or pollutant levels in various media or in humans, plants, and animals. [Terms of Env]
Bullet Biomonitoring - The use of living organisms to test the suitability of effluents for discharge into receiving waters and to test the quality of such waters downstream from the discharge. [Terms of Env]
Bullet Monitoring Stations - Station where the presence, effect, or level of any polluting substance in air or water, noise and blasting, radiation, transport movements, land subsidence, or change in the character of vegetation are measured quantitatively or qualitatively. [GEMET-US]
Bullet Peer Review - A rigorous, formal, and documented evaluation process using objective criteria and qualified and independent reviewers to make a judgment of the technical/ scientific/business merit, the actual or anticipated results, and the productivity and management effectiveness of programs and/or projects. [EERE Peer Review Guide 2004]
Bullet Risk Assessment - Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the risk posed to human health and/or the environment by the actual or potential presence and/or use of specific pollutants. [Terms of Env]
Bullet Sampling - The obtaining of small representative quantities of material for the purpose of analysis. [GEMET-US]
