Terms & Acronyms

Use this search to retrieve specific terms or acronyms and their definitions.

This search allows the user to search all approved terms and acronyms in the system. Users may select the type of search and terms of their choosing, as well as how the term should apply to the search results (begins with, contains, exact match).

The Search Results page will return an alphabetical list based on the search criteria. The user may click on a vocabulary link to go directly to the vocabulary containing the term.

Note that not all terms and acronyms within the system have definitions.

Acronyms are treated as terms within the system.

Glossaries & Keyword Lists

Use this search to find and retrieve an entire glossary or key word list.

A glossary is a terminological dictionary which contains a list of terms and definitions in a subject field.

A keyword list is a list of words used in a specific context, often as drop down menus for a system. The keyword list may or may not have definitions. It is usually less than 20 terms.

This search allows the user to search all glossaries and keyword lists currently stored in the system. Users may select subject areas, type of search, and terms of their choosing, as well as how the term should apply to the search results (begins with, contains, exact match). Note that a search may be conducted regardless of a term/keyword having a definition.

The Search Results page displays all glossaries and keyword lists that match the search results. Clicking on the glossary or keyword list will launch to that glossary or keyword list’s details screen. The Details page lists all the terms that belong to a specified glossary or keyword list.

Taxonomies

Use this search to retrieve taxonomies. This search provides a drop down menu for all taxonomies currently stored in the system.

The Taxonomy Search Results page displays the taxonomy results in a hierarchical view.

The Taxonomy Term Location Search Results show a breadcrumb view of where a term is located within the hierarchy. It will also display any related terms for a specified term within the hierarchy.

A taxonomy is an ordered and systematic classification terms whose components are ranked into level of subordination according to specific rules.

The taxonomies in the system do not have definitions.

The search results will be presented in a hierarchy that can be expanded by clicking on the “+” next to the word.

Thesauri

Use this search to retrieve thesauri. Currently there is only one thesaurus in the ETSS - the European Environment Agency’s General Environmental Multilingual Thesaurus GEMET). A link is provided directly to the European site. GEMET can be search in 22 languages.
