Working for You

SoR Logo
The Working for You page is designed to showcase select examples of how EPA programs and its partners are using the System of Registries and OEI resources to support a host of data integration activities.

EPA Office of Water/Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) program

EPA's Office of Wastewater Management requested support in establishing well-formed data requirements as part of a new Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations rule. Data standards team members met with the regulation writers to review existing requirements in the regulations, and provided a list of well-formed data elements for inclusion in the regulation, and well-formed data elements for inclusion on the Form 2B permit application. The team used the Environmental Data Registry to find appropriate data elements approved by EPA's Data Standards program for reuse in the CAFO regulation. This effort represented the first time that Agency data standards were used to drive the regulatory life-cycle process, and will enhance the Agency's ability to integrate CAFO information with other Agency information resources.

Radiation Information System for Cleanup Sites (RISCS)

EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (OAR) partnered with OEI to develop the Radiation Information System for Cleanup Sites (RISCS) as a repository for publicly-available, descriptive information on radiation cleanup sites in the United States and its territories. Radiation site cleanup information is collected by multiple programs and many different agencies. It is envisioned that a single repository of radiation site information will provide for better analysis of cleanup progress at a national level. A key feature of this application is its linkage to the System of Registries. Site description information for RISCS is provided from, and updated by, the Facility Registry System. Site contaminant identification information is provided from the Substance Registry System. RISCS application metadata will be stored in the Environmental Data Registry.

Environmental Data Standards Council

The Environmental Data Standards Council (EDSC) is a partnership among EPA, States and Tribal partners to develop and agree upon data standards for environmental information collection and exchange. The Council seeks to promote efficient sharing of environmental information between State, EPA and Tribal partners providing data standards as a basic element of new data exchange and data integration activities. The EDSC Web site contains links to data standards whose data elements are stored in the Environmental Data Registry. The ability of the public to access these standards promotes the re-use of data standards and fosters data integration between trading partners.

State Environmental Data Exchange Strategy (SEDES) - State Hazardous Waste Cleanup Terminology for Information Sharing

The Information Management Center (IMC) under EPA's Office of Emergency and Remedial Response is the lead organization for Superfund information management, office automation, and program measurement functions. Because hazardous waste cleanup activities are governed by different implementing regulations, cleanup information often is not described consistently. In its mission to develop innovative ways to share and manage hazardous waste cleanup information among its partners and the public, the IMC partnered with the Association of States and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) and OEI to develop a common cleanup language. Through facilitated information gathering sessions with State partners, information was shared about hazardous waste cleanup regulations, data management systems, and data elements. Hazardous waste cleanup terms were collected and made available in the Terminology Reference System. The Environmental Data Registry serves as the repository for metadata about cleanup data elements from both State and federal information systems.
