Using the SoR searches, you can query the registries by information resource, by text or text string, alphabetically, or by a specific metadata item. Some searches allow the search options containing, beginning with, and exact match when matching a text query. When a metadata item search is selected, a form for specification of the query will be provided.
- Information Resource Search - queries data systems and other information resources by beginning letter/number, keyword, or information resource type.
- Data Element Search - queries data element metadata by name, definition, XML tag, information resource type, or information resource.
- Terminology Search - queries environmental terms by keyword in the term or definition.
- Organization Search - queries organizations by name or acronym.
- Substance Search - queries substance identification information by name, keyword, or identifier.
- Environmental Metadata Gateway - enables users to search the metadata registries using a URL with integrated search capabilities.

Information Resource Search
An information resource search queries the Registry of EPA Applications and Databases (READ) for information resources. Please visit the READ home page to query information resources.
Data Element Search
A metadata item search queries one of the many separate categories of metadata recorded in the Environmental Data Registry (EDR). Performing a metadata item search will navigate to the EDR to display search results.
The Data Element Search can access information in two ways:
- To search for a specific word or phrase, enter text (e.g., air) or a text string (e.g., Clean Air Act) in the Name, Definition, or XML Tag field. The search will query all information types, unless a specific information resource type (e.g., Data System) is selected from the pull-down list.
- To obtain a complete list of data elements for a specific resource type (e.g., Data Standard), select an information resource type from the pull-down list and leave the Name, Definition, and XML Tag fields blank.
The Data Element Advanced search page provides additional search fields such as administrative status, data type, and EDR Identifier.
Terminology Search
A terminology search queries the Terminology Reference System (TRS) for environmental terms and definitions. Performing a terminology search will navigate you to the TRS to display search results.
Organization Search
An organization search queries the Registry of EPA Applications and Databases (READ) for organizations represented in the SoR. Performing an organization search will navigate to READ to display search results.
To search for a specific word or phrase, enter text (e.g., EPA) or a text string (e.g., Environmental Protection Agency) in the keyword field. The search will query all EPA organizations, unless a specific EPA organization (e.g., OA) is selected from the pull-down lists. The organization selected in each pull-down list determines the pull-down list selections for the subsequent organization, e.g., the Program selection determines what displays in the Office pull-down list, the Office selection determines what displays in the Division pull-down list, etc. Therefore, pull-down list selections must be made in the order in which they are appear: Program, Office, Division, and Branch. The pull down lists for Program, Office, Division, and Branch may contain some other organizational types (like Staffs). Therefore, they define a general hierarchical organizational structure, but may vary across the Agency.
Substance Search
A substance search queries the Substance Registry System (SRS) for substance identification information (e.g., pH, analytes, organisms). Performing a substance search will navigate you to the SRS to display search results.
Using the search below, you can query for substances by common identifiers, names, or alternate identifiers.
Environmental Metadata Gateway
The
Environmental Metadata Gateway (EMG)
offers a
Direct Portal to access information in the
SoR registries. Go to the EMG to learn more on how to build
links to the Direct Portal and to learn more about other
EMG features, including Custom Portals and the XML Gateway.
Please read the
Disclaimer for the System of Registries.
