The Environmental Metadata Gateway serves as a stand-alone application that provides customized access into information in the System of Registries (SoR).
It includes multiple search engine portals that publish information from the underlying SoR metadata in EPA default or user-defined look-and-feel templates. The EMG enables users, both inside and outside of EPA, to search and seamlessly navigate to the pages displaying metadata registry content using an URL. In the future, EMG will expand with integrated search capabilities and the ability to transfer information to and from the registries in XML through the XML Gateway feature.
The EMG consists of three primary components:
- Direct Portal - The primary component to the EMG is the Direct Portal function which passes user-developed parameters to hit against relevant data from the SoR registries. This component provides portal access to substances, data standards, data elements, code sets, organizations, terminology, and information resources. The key aspect of this type of portal is that users will query and navigate directly to the detailed information through the separate registries' software. This area of the site includes implementation instructions for partners to build URLs that query relevant registry data sources.
- Custom Portal - The second component is a customized portal that supports the data requirements of targeted registry partners (for instance, EDSC and Environmental Information Exchange Network). This area of the application provides partners the ability to access registry data relevant to their business areas through their own look-and-feel template. For instance, the EDSC is able to readily access detail pages for data standards and data elements independent of an EPA context.
- XML Gateway - The third component to the EMG is a import/export feature which would provide users implementation instructions to pass XML data to and from the various registries using Application Programming Interfaces (API's).
