A future capability of the Environmental Metadata Gateway will be to provide information in an XML format. Automated business to business transactions would be facilitated using Application Programming Interfaces (API) to support automated query and retrieval of data. Using the XML Gateway, users would be able to pick from a number of APIs that would, for example, provide information on data elements and data standards from the Environmental Data Registry, term information from the Terminology Reference System, or substance information from the Substance Registry System.
The XML Gateway would provide information on how to use the APIs to set up XML data exchanges with the different registries within the System of Registries.
