Develop Systems

EDR Logo
The Develop Systems page assists computer programmers or systems analysts interested in the representation, format, definition, and valid values of a standard to develop or reengineer application systems.

Introduction

The EDR can assist system developers perform many tasks during their development process. It can help developers identify data standards to download and incorporate into their systems to enhance system interoperability and data exchange and comply with Agency policy. EDR's search capabilities provide various methods of searching for metadata. The EDR enables developers to download data elements and attributes, allowable values (e.g., code sets), and other types of metadata to use in system design and documentation. Incorporating standardized data, such as data element definitions and specifications and sets of allowable values into systems is more efficient than developing and documenting new data elements.

The EDR provides a data mapping capability that can be used in data harmonization. System developers can use the same capability to assess their systems' conformance with the standards and download the information needed to bring the system into conformance with the standards.

Developers can also subscribe to be notified of changes to the EDR and read the Registry Update newsletter for current EPA standards activities.

Visit the Data Standards page to review the approved data standards for applicability to your system. Standard-related metadata can be viewed and downloaded from each of the Data Standards detail pages.

Comments on any of the standards can be submitted directly from the standard detail page or from the Contact Us page.

Visit the Implement Standards page to learn how to use the EDR to implement data standards in your system.

Visit the Search page to browse for metadata. Use the Information Resource search to find registered systems and view their data elements. You can use the Text search to retrieve metadata items by word or phrases. The Metadata Item search allows the user to search on different types of metadata, including data elements. The Organization search lists organizations with information in the EDR.

Conformance Assessment

Picture of a black triangle Implement Standards

You can conduct a conformance assessment to determine whether a system complies with the approved data standards. This feature enables you to search for data elements and generate a comparative matrix. The matrix can include as many data elements as you select. The matrix, which enables you to compare your data element attributes to the standards, can be downloaded and imported into other applications for analysis.

The Implement Standards page describes the conformance assessment process.

EDR and XML

The XML page currently includes XML tags for EPA data standards.

Register Data Elements

Picture of a black triangle Registration
Visit the EDR Registration page to register data elements from an EPA information system and make the data element metadata available to the public and other system developers.

Keeping Current

Subscribing to the EDR keeps you updated on new features and enhancements to the EDR including additional harmonizing data features. To keep current on recent EPA data standards progress, go to the Newsletter page.

Future Capabilities

XML Users will be able to create XML tags based on new harmonized data elements and to combine the XML tags to create an XML schema online.

Multiple Download Formats The results of EDR searches, including the comparison matrices, are available for download in a text report and comma delimited formats. Formats considered for future implementation include XML file formats.

Online Harmonization Users will be able to build "harmonized" data elements by selecting attributes of data elements from a comparison matrix and registering the new data elements online.
