Implement Standards

EDR Logo
The Implement Standards page assists program managers, systems managers, and systems developers who are responsible for implementing data standards in their application systems to ensure use of consistently defined and formatted data elements and sets of data values for efficiently shared environmental information.

Introduction

Use the Compare Tool to perform conformance assessments.

Users can find EDR information useful in revising systems to meet standards conformance. Information is available on standards that have been approved, standards under development, and the due dates for standards implementation. The standard data elements have been divided into subject area groups to assist design of database entities. Use sets of permitted data values associated with the standards in system development. Download data element attributes such as names, definitions, maximum lengths, and datatypes for use in system design and documentation. Use sets of permitted data values associated with the standards in system development.

Submit comments on any of the standards from the standard detail page or from the Contact Us page.

Download and Implement

Once you have reviewed the available data standards, you may want to incorporate the standards in your own system. All final data standards can be downloaded for use in system development activities. The EDR allows you to download a final standard from the Data Standards page or the data standard detail pages. The final data standards can be downloaded as a text report or in Oracle (DDL and Designer) and Microsoft Access file formats.

You can find a description and graphic depiction of the process used by EPA to develop and approve data standards on the Data Standards Process page. This process is a useful reference for those standards implementers seeking information on the developing and approving data standards.

Conformance Assessment

Users who have a data system in the EDR, can conduct a conformance assessment to see if it complies with the approved data standards. The standards conformance assessment enables users to search for data elements and to generate a side-by-side comparative matrix. This matrix can be downloaded and imported into other applications for analysis. This capability is useful for reviewing standards conformance prior to system reengineering activities.

If your application is not registered in the EDR, go to the Registration page to find out how to register your data elements.

If your application is in the EDR, you can start the assessment by going to the Compare Tool search and entering your search criteria.

Review the Data Standards implementation fact sheets for information on implementation dates. These fact sheets will assist users in determining if standards must be implemented in their systems.

Environmental Metadata Gateway

The Environmental Metadata Gateway is a search engine that enables users to search metadata registry content using a URL with integrated search capabilities. It enables users outside EPA to search and seamlessly navigate to the detail pages meeting the search criteria. The Portal displays an interim screen to inform the user about what information has been requested and which system will be queried.

Currently, the Environmental Metadata Gateway search capabilities include data standards, data element lists, data elements, substances, terms, and information resources.

The Environmental Metadata Gateway Substance Search lets users build URLs that automatically query various substance data and display the appropriate detail information. The Enviromental Metadata Gateway Search enables users to search metadata registry content using a URL with integrated search capabilities. The interim Portal screen identifies the appropriate application according to the type of search and the expected results.

XML

Future Capabilities

Multiple Download Formats The results of EDR searches, including the comparison matrices, are currently available for download in a text report and comma delimited formats. Formats considered for future implementation include XML file formats.
