Introduction
EMPACT
stands for Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking. It is a new approach to working with communities to collect, manage, and present environmental information. The program aims to work with communities to make timely, accurate, and understandable environmental information available to millions of people in the largest metropolitan areas across the country.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its partner communities use a variety of methods to provide environmental information which may include: the Internet, compact disks, television, radio, newspapers, fliers, billboards, town-hall meetings, community organizations, person-to-person communication, and environmental teller machines. EPA grants are available to support these projects.
Two types of projects are supported under the EMPACT program: EPA projects and community initiated projects. All EMPACT projects are required to use standard data elements and register their data elements in the Environmental Data Registry (EDR). The purpose of the EDR is to promote the collection of data in a consistent fashion so that information sharing is easier. A standard set of data elements has been prepared for use by EMPACT projects.
The master list of EMPACT data elements has been grouped into five subsets to aid the user in finding related data elements. Some data elements appear in multiple groups. Selecting one of the boxes below will provide an abstract about each group, a list of data elements, and a link to any related documentation.
