The EDR allows you to search for and compare data elements from various sources (e.g., data standards, data systems). The Compare Tool is a fully integrated feature within the EDR and appears on every data element list in the EDR.

Search |
Use the following steps to enter your search criteria in the Data Element Search.
To search for a specific word or phrase, enter text (e.g., air) or a text string (e.g., Clean Air Act) in the Name, Definition, or XML Tag field. The search will query all information types unless a specific information resource type (e.g., Data System) is selected from the pull-down list.
To obtain a complete list of data elements by information resource type (e.g., Data Standard), select an information resource type from the pull-down list and leave the Name, Definition, and XML Tag fields blank.
You can further refine your search by selecting a specific information resource. To limit your search to a specific source select ALL from the source type pull-down list, then highlight the source from the Information Resource window below. Information resources most frequently searched appear at the top of the list (e.g., EPA Data File and Data Group).

Compare |
From the data element list created in Step 1, select the Compare box adjacent to the data element. The selected data elements will generate a report matrix in a new browser window. When additional Compare boxes are checked, subsequent data elements will be added to the matrix. To remove data elements from the matrix report, deselect the adjacent Compare box.
|
 |
Download |
Create a download file of the matrix report by selecting a download format (Text Report, Oracle (SQL*Loader)), Comma Separated (Microsoft Access, Excel), and selecting the Begin Download button.
|
 |
Clear |
The EDR matrix report data is saved and will continue to display previous results until the end of the day. If you want to clear the matrix report, select the Clear All button on the matrix window and select Reload (Netscape) or Refresh (Internet Explorer) on the data element list window. The report matrix will not be cleared by simply closing the matrix browser.

The Compare Tool is also found on select data element lists, such as data standards, data systems, and data groups.
The Compare Tool supports all the query activities required to harmonize data and perform data standards conformance assessments. For more information on how the Compare Tool can be used for data harmonization and conformance assessments, go to the How To... pages for Implement Standards and Harmonize Data.
