XML and the EDR

EDR Logo
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is the technology for facilitating the exchange of data. XML is implemented using tags. XML can be part of a standard for exchanging data between EPA, its state and tribal partners, localities, the regulated community, and other entities.

XML tags will be established for all EPA standard data elements. These tags have been registered in the EDR as alternate for data element names and can be found on the data element detail page for most of the EPA data standards (see XML Tag Search). An XML tag name can be identified with the Name Context of "XML Tag" or "XML Tag (Draft)". Alternatively, the EDR provides a list of approved XML Tags and draft XML Tags.

XML Registry

The Environmental Information Exchange Network Exit EPA sitehas initiated an interim XML Registry. The XML Registry is a tool for sharing information about XML Data Exchange Template (DETs), XML schemas, namespaces, Web Services Description Language (WSDL) files, and other supporting files needed to map data flows between partners. The Registry contains information about schemas under development, as well as schema approved for use on the Network. In time, the XML Registry will provide a clearinghouse for information related to data flows on the Network. The data may also be found in the EDR and READ.

XML Tag Search

To search for a specific word or phrase, enter text or text string in the XML Tag field to retrieve metadata. The search will only query the fields in which you have entered text. To obtain a complete list of data elements by source type (e.g., Data Standard), select an information resource type from the pull-down list and leave the other fields blank.

XML Tag:
Search Options: ContainingBeginning WithExact Match
Information Resource Type:

You can further refine your search by selecting a specific information resource. To limit your search to a specific source select All from the Information Resource Type pull-down list, then select one or more Information Resources from the window below.

The list is limited to sources containing XML Tags. The most frequently searched sources appear at the top of the list (e.g., EPA Data Standards and Data Systems).

Multiple sources may be selected by using the CTRL key and left mouse click.
